A Costa Rica Travelogue

"From city lights to countryside sights, we journey to the Caribbean with banana plantations to our right and to our left. The fruit hanging heavy in wait to be pulled.

Captain Norton graciously awaits to transfer us by boat along the Reventazon River.
Thick & dense, dinosaur size leaves --- to our right and to our left. It's a jungle out there...

Candles light our path, the stars overhead mirror their glow.
A warm reception welcomes us to Tortuga Lodge.

We excitedly anticipate our next 3 days enveloped by tropical vegetation.

Cruising through the Tortuguero Canals we are rewarded by the playful antics of Spider, Howler and White face monkeys. Iguanas warm themselves in the sun. Green parrots make a raucous overhead.A brilliant blue butterfly flitting in and out of the dark green forest shadow...

At sunrise we WALK the beach in search of newly hatched baby turtles.
Other worldly, the dawning light reveals deep tracks and hollows, evidence of the previous night's nesting.

At night we carefully WALK in darkness to reach a gravid Giant Green Sea Turtle digging her nest in the sand.

We wait!

At least 100 eggs are laid. Her flippers flail to cover the nest.
We follow as she returns to the midnight sea.
The grand finale to another great day.

A tidal river at our doorstep. Crashing waves of the ocean just beyond. The night sounds lull us to sleep.
